Red koi swimming through dark rippling water beside autumn leaves

The Koi That Kept Going: Luck, Folklore & Seven

BEHIND THE PRIN
A red fish, a difficult current, and seven prints for the days you need a little belief.

The fish has every reason to turn around. The water is moving the wrong way. The climb looks unreasonable. Somewhere downstream, life would probably be easier. Still, it swims.

That is the image I keep returning to when I look at Karp Hero. A wide-eyed red koi pushes through black curling waves, carrying the cheerful greeting “Konnichiwa Fish Lovers.” It has the energy of a vintage shop poster and the stubbornness of someone who has decided to give today another try.

For this edition of Behind the Print, we follow that fish through folklore, festival skies and six other Oldskull designs. The cultural stories have their own histories. The meanings we find in the tees are REN’s personal readings, offered as little reminders to carry into an ordinary day.

Why does the koi appear in stories about good fortune?

Carp are associated with courage and determination in Japanese cultural imagery. Around Children’s Day on May 5, carp-shaped streamers called koinobori fly outdoors, carrying wishes for children’s growth and well-being. The Museum of Fine Arts Boston describes the fish as an emblem of strength and determination.

A related Chinese legend tells of a carp that becomes a dragon after overcoming the Dragon Gate. The Metropolitan Museum of Art discusses this story in a fourteenth-century Chinese inkstone, where the transformation evokes success in the civil-service examinations. It gives effort a spectacular ending, a creature becoming something greater through a difficult passage.

That is where this story’s idea of luck begins. A symbol can give you something to remember when you need courage. The outcome still belongs to the choices you make.

1. Karp Hero · Keep swimming

The red koi in Karp Hero has an expression worth studying. It looks surprised by the size of the task and ready to attempt it anyway. Japanese lettering, a Niigata stamp and faded colour make the print feel like a found poster with a story already attached. My reading is simple. Wear it on a day when you are tempted to postpone the first step, then take that step. Send the portfolio. Start the sketch. Return to the project you left half-finished.

2. Koinobori · Make room to grow

Follow the koi upward and the water becomes sky. On Koinobori, a blue carp catches the wind while colourful streamers trail behind. The design connects directly with the Japanese festival tradition described above. What I love here is the movement. Each fish needs a little room before it can fill with air. It feels like a useful image for a new beginning, especially one you are still learning how to handle.

3. Dragonbound Katana · Imagine the next chapter

The Dragon Gate story makes a natural bridge to Dragonbound Katana, with its black dragon curling around a blade. This particular composition is Oldskull’s fantasy artwork, and I read its tightly coiled energy as preparation. There is a moment before any worthwhile change when nothing seems to be happening from the outside. You are practising, learning, sharpening your attention. Keep a little faith in that quiet part of the story.

4. Spirit of the Stripes · Borrow some courage

A white tiger and a samurai advance beneath a crimson sun. Their shared direction gives Spirit of the Stripes its force. For this print, I imagine courage arriving through company, the friend who walks into an unfamiliar room beside you, or the person who reminds you that you have done difficult things before. On a day that asks for confidence, that is a good image to carry.

5. Born from the Wild Wave · Meet the difficult day

Now the water gets louder. A fisherman, Mount Fuji and a wave with a skull-like face turn Born from the Wild Wave into a dramatic encounter. This is a darker stop in our story. I read it as respect for what you cannot control, followed by attention to what you can. Choose the next workable move. Ask for help when you need it. Even a small adjustment can change how you meet the current.

6. Onzen · Let good company count

Six skeletons crowd into a hot spring beneath Mount Fuji, and someone still finds time for a peace sign. Onzen brings a welcome laugh after all that swimming and swordsmanship. In this reading, good fortune looks like having people with whom you can relax. Send the message to the group chat. Pick a day. Make the plan small enough that everyone can actually turn up.

7. Tokyo Street Kitchen · Leave a seat for someone

Our route ends beneath red lanterns, beside weathered teal panels and a counter full of imagined warmth. Tokyo Street Kitchen brings us back to everyday pleasures. A shared meal. An unexpected conversation. A place you want to return to. If the koi began with determination, this final print offers a reason for the effort, a life with room for those moments.

Which story would you wear today?

You might choose the fish because you are starting again, the dragon because you are working towards something, or the skeletons because your friends would laugh at them. Personal meaning is allowed to be that simple.

For an easy outfit, let one illustrated tee lead and pair it with familiar jeans or relaxed trousers. Before choosing a size, compare the measurements on the individual product page with a tee you enjoy wearing. Each linked image above opens its matching design so you can look closer and check current availability.

If another story is calling, take a slow look through the Oldskull Express graphic tee collection. There are plenty of characters still waiting for their turn.

T-Shirt Size Guide

Use a tee that fits you well. Lay it flat and measure straight across the chest, 1 inch (2.5 cm) below the armholes. Double that number for the chest circumference of the garment.

Approximate garment chest measurements
Size Flat width Chest around
M 20 in / 50.8 cm 40 in / 101.6 cm
L 22 in / 55.9 cm 44 in / 111.8 cm
XL 24 in / 61.0 cm 48 in / 121.9 cm
XXL 25 in / 63.5 cm 50 in / 127.0 cm

For length, measure from the shoulder at the collar to the bottom hem. Check the individual product page for its length and fit, as these vary by style.
